How many airports does Istanbul have?
There are three airports in Istanbul. The first is Atatürk International Airport. The second is Sabiha Gökçen International Airport. The construction of a third international airport was completed at the end of 2018 and became operational. This will be Europe’s largest airport in 2027, with 6 runways and a capacity of 200 million passengers per year.
Ataturk International Airport is Turkey’s largest and busiest airport. the first president of the Republic of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal airport has been given the name Ataturk. The airport is located on the European side of Istanbul, approximately 23 km from the city center. Public transport or taxis are available 24 hours a day to the city center. This airport has been closed to air traffic since April 2019.
Sabiha Gökçen International Airport is located on the Anatolian side of Istanbul, approximately 50 km east of the city center. Sabiha Gokcen, Turkey’s first female pilot and was the adopted daughter of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. The airport has an international and national terminal.
Istanbul International Airport is one of the largest airports in the world and includes the most modern technologies. The airport is located in the district of Arnavutköy in the northwest of the city. Its distance from the center of Istanbul is approximately 50 km and it is easy to reach by car, taxi, or public transportation.
